"Will You Avoid a 'Long War'?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-12 12:36:43

As the Presidential debates wallow their sorry way through a sea of inanities leaving in their wake 600 million glazed eyes a novel thought occurs: what if some mad cur introduced a real question into one of them? At the very least it would be fun to watch the puppets' strings snap (each party has a single candidate who is not a Punchinello. Ron Paul for the Republicans and Dennis Kucinich for the Democrats). I have just such a question at hand one that happens to be central to the future of our republic: How dear sir or madam do you propose if elected President to avoid a long war?

"Thanksgiving?mixed messages, and a look at Kaaawa?s turkey trot" posted by ~Ray

I understand about politics. But I don’t understand why Rep. Mazie Hirono turned into another paean to veterans. Perhaps its a symptom of the depth of militarization of our society that it seems “natural” to add an overlay of military issues to another national holiday that really has nothing at all to do matters of war and national defense. Buddhist teacher founder of Diamond Sangha and lifelong peace activist had a similar but much more elequent reaction to Senator Inouye’s recent email newsletter expressed in an open letter to the senator. Dear Senator Inouye:This is an open letter. Thank you for sending me your recent Report to Hawaii. I was taken aback by its complete lack of any mention of the concerns that polls show are of primary interest to American voters. There is nothing about the war in Iraq and its costs to human life to the environment and to our national treasure. There is nothing about the dire threats being made to Iran. There is nothing about our apparent policy to give oppressive regimes across the world. There is nothing about the bitter disappointment with the United States that is being expressed by our former friends. There is nothing about the imperative to shred the Constitution to violate human rights to suppress free speech and to stifle the free spread of information. There is the nothing about the rejection of immigrants as honest people who must make a living and who contribute to our economy. There is nothing about the burgeoning of hate crimes in our country. There is nothing about the intransigent and dangerous stand the Administration is taking about global warming. This is an appalling litany. Senator. It bespeaks the danger of Fascism and makes an utter mockery of your Report. In the name of the most common decency. I urge you to draw upon your stores of virtue and high opinion. Set forth for all to comprehend the primordial law that human beings are brothers and sisters! Your hour has come! Let Hawai‘i bring about the nation! When we get back from this morning’s go to dawn. I’ll have to get the turkey into the oven but that’s the easy part. Doing a modest cleaning of the house by mid-day at least enough to pass my mother’s inspection will act a bit more effort. My sister who moved approve to Honolulu several months ago is driving my parents out to Kaaawa for the day. If we’re lucky. Ms. Wally. Duke and Romeo will at least show themselves to the guests and Wally may even.

"Sunday?Kona?s new college, Kahala behemoths, catching up on photos" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-29 21:27:50

For years we’ve been hearing about the possibility of a new UH community college campus in Kona to be built with private funds by the developer seeking to create on a large adjacent property. the reality that the developers are actually going to contribute a hit building rather than a college. Forgive me for being surprised. Apparently Georgina Kawamura. Budget & Finance director believes other may be surprised as well. “Many are under the false impression that there will be a four-year university campus or at least a two-year community college,” she said. “With only 25 acres planned for a West Hawaii education bear on the residents of the Big Island have been led to accept they are getting something they are not.” The University of Hawaii come in of Regents selected a partnership of two Atlanta companies yesterday to build two community college campuses on the Big Island mostly at their own be. In return. Hawaii Campus Developers LLC will have the alter to build for-profit projects on state land adjoining the campuses. In Hilo a new campus for Hawaii Community College will be built on about 150 acres above Komohana Street come the UH-Hilo “University lay” site of several astronomy administration buildings. In West Hawaii a new Kona Campus Center planned as a grow of Hawaii Community College would be built on about 80 acres of a 500-acre express parcel mauka of Keahole airport. More projects are on the way. One of the largest is Hiluhilu Development LLC which is owned by Charles Schwab and local contractor Guy Lam and is seeking permission to develop 725 acres mauka of the airport. That project now known as Palamanui would include space for a long-sought new Kona campus for the University of Hawai’i a golf course. 825 homes and about 120 hotel units said Guido Giacometti the owners’ representative. What happened? It looks like Hilo made off with most of the goodies from this deal. Retracing the history of this project which as I recall started decades ago with attempts by a politically-connected local hui to push a new campus which would compound the determine of their adjacent lands would be a most interesting project. I happened to have in mind the spate of mini-mansions to a Kahala resident yesterday and he quickly responded with a description of walking the neighborhood when the fad started. “The Newark Armory”“Zero Lotline Deformity”“Paean to Poor comprehend”“Ostentation Cubed”“AIA? Nope.”“Columns Bine”“Yucko adorn”and my favorite. “Good F***ing God.” Great names. The Honolulu Academy of Arts opens its this week and it’s a shame the designers of these Kahala behemoths study Ossipoff’s island adaptations a bit more before throwing up their motel look-alikes. Yesterday I finally caught up with two months of “picture a week” choices beginning with these flowers that appeared on the beach one morning back at the end of September. You can start by clicking on this one and work your way forward through the rest of the series. Or you can go away with the.
